About us

UK based Ruby on Rails development

At Kyan we know a lot about Ruby on Rails development. We’ve been using it since late 2006 (Since the 1.0 release) and would consider ourselves one of the leading Ruby on Rails specialists in the UK.

What is Ruby on Rails?

Ruby on Rails logo

Ruby on Rails (aka Rails) is an open source framework for creating database driven web applications; it enables agile development by favoring convention over configuration.

Rails is open source and that means it is being enhanced and extended every day to keep up with the latest web trends and demands. It is actively supported by a vibrant ecosystem of conferences, developer tools, specialist hosts and developers all around the world.

Ruby on Rails is used by many high-traffic websites such as the yellow pages, twitter and MTV.

Why we like it

“Rails allows us to deliver projects on shorter deadlines without compromising the quality of our work.”

Rails allows us to deliver projects on shorter deadlines without compromising the quality of our work.

Our Rails developers can take a project from the initial conception to a rough and ready working application very quickly. This allows us to show our clients how their website is going to work at an early stage in the project so that their feedback can be used to make changes before too much time has been invested.

Updates and changes to working applications cost our clients less because they are made easier and quicker by Rails. This is because it encourages consistent coding practices and introduces a common project directory structure in the underlying code.

Rails makes it easy for us to use the latest web technologies. Implementation of Ajax features, RSS feeds and the like are uncomplicated and easy to maintain.

What we use it for

We use Ruby on Rails for what it’s really good at. Building bespoke web applications and websites.

Rails is incredibly flexible and is suitable for us to use on the majority of the projects we undertake. This has allowed us to become specialists in Ruby on Rails development through years of experience.

We have used it to build content management systems, e-commerce solutions, company intranets and extranets, online tender management systems and many other applications. We have also used Rails to integrate with numerous third party services and API’s, some of these include:

Examples of our work

Asset management

Screengrab of the asset management tool, Sparklebox

We used Ruby on Rails to develop an administration system for thousands of stock illustrations. It utilises Amazon’s cloud computing to process the images and stores them on Amazon’s unlimited cheap storage facility. The client doesn't need to worry about upgrading storage or processor power and saves costs by only paying for what they use.

Staffing intranet

Screengrab of the staffing database

Our client needed to keep a database of all the potential people they might book on various jobs. We created a fast and efficient application that allows them to manage all their jobs and incorporates a fast and powerful search feature to enable the users to find potential staff based on their vital statistics, integrating with Google Maps to show the results by location.

CPD tool

Screengrab of the teacher development application, Blueskyeducation

24,000 teachers across the UK use Blue Sky Education to help further their careers. This web application has been an on going development and Rails allows us to easily add new features whilst scaling to meet the increasing traffic demands as more teachers sign up to use the tool.
